Item Description

Bright rich orange patches of minium are attractively scattered on the large, contrasting, sculptural, dramatically etched vesicular goethite matrix on this impressive combination specimen from the classic Broken Hill deposit. Minium is an uncommon lead oxide. Minium formed during extensive mine fires in the late 1800s and early 1900s and is as such, a post-mining occurrence. Its status as a true mineral is in doubt. See the classic and definitive 1982 coffee table book on the deposit "Minerals of Broken Hill". Regardless, this is an extremely colorful, highly unusual, large and very uncommon combination specimen of the species from this renowned locale.
