Item Description
Lustrous, burnt-orange to brownish-orange, nubby curved barrel-shaped mimetite prisms (campylite) fill the sculptural vug in sugary milky quartz matrix on this very fine and rich old-time specimen from the historic Dry Gill Mine of Cumbria. Scattered tiny green pyromorphite prisms are a rare, excellent and colorful accessory. This piece has excellent coverage. One bruised barrel on the left side and a bit of periphery wear across the top is noted, but are certainly very modest detractions for such an important old-time combination in this size range (few large pieces turn up on the market). Dry Gill was active as an ore producer from 1830-1869. Fine pieces were recovered in recent times, but this is definitely a 19th century piece. Valued at $1250-1500.
