Item Description

Mimetite after Cerussite is a rare pseudomorph for Tsumeb, and in fact unique for this size and quality in all the world; and this large miniature is an attractive combination of thick, substantial Cerussites completely coated by yellowish-tan Mimetite crystals. These Mimetites, lustrous, prismatic, and up to 3-4 mm in length, are undoubtedly sourcing their lead from the underlying Cerussites. Complete all around, the only contact is at the bottom. It reveals just how glassy and thick the Cerussites are, as well as showing the extent of replacement. On the upper Cerussite you can clearly see, from multiple angles, the development of cyclic twinning. It's a great thing when any pseudo retains the form or the original/underlying species. The Mimetite has a vivid orange fluorescence and the Cerussite a light, off-yellow. There was a famous find of similar specimens in 1958. I do not know if this was from that find, but this is certainly an excellent old-timer from this very famous mine and, such things were never common. This originated in a small collection of choice miniatures in Namibia owned by Erik Louw. He was well regarded for his careful choice and the pristine and beautiful condition of his specimens. His collection later became the core of the miniatures suite of the Sussman Tsumeb collection, at the time based in Chicago. We purchased that in 2003, and sold this to Star Van Scriver, who sold it to Dr. Pohl shortly after. At the time, it was valued $4000-5000.
