Item Description
This piece was labeled as coming from San Pedro Corralitos, but we thank Mexican mineral expert, Peter Megaw for reaching out and letting us know that, the piece is "really from a much rarer locality...the Bilbao Mine in Zacatecas. It's a D- for San Pedro and a B+ for Bilbao. There may be some fine black plattnerite on it too" Peter said that it came from material that he sold circa 1993-1994. With that said, typically the Mimetites are a uniform yellow color, but this one is distinctly different, showing a mixture of pale yellow to orange-yellow to orange to peachy colored spheres, and some are nearly black (dark grey - potentially the plattnerite that Peter mentioned) and chalky white. The piece is filled with "balls" measuring up to 1.0 cm across, sitting on oxidized matrix. Overall the piece is in very good condition, only a few spots of damage that I can see. A really cool and RARE locality specimen that would make a cool "oddball" addition to any Mexican suite or collection of secondary ore minerals. From the collection of David L. Stoudt.
