Item Description

These Mimetites came out in the early 2000s, and the mine is now abandoned and flood, never to produce them again. When they first hit the market, they were immediately recognized as some of the finest examples of the species to come out in decades. This wonderful toenail sized specimen features many very sharp, glassy, beautiful golden to yellow-orange colored hexagonal prisms on oxidized matrix. The crystals range from translucent to fairly gemmy near the terminations. Most crystals are pristine and some actually show very slight skeletal / "hoppered" growth. The largest Mimetite measures 8 mm long. If you collect minerals of the Apatite Group or Chinese specimens, don't miss out on this wonderful and showy display piece from this now defunct locality. The piece comes to us from the collection of David Burgess (1951-2016) with a label from dealer Russ Behnke with an old price of $100, but the piece is certainly worth more today. David was a prolific species collector from Newington, Connecticut, and the namesake for the extremely rare cobalt arsenate species Burgessite, which he discovered.
