Meyerhofferite pseudomorph after Inyoite

Item Description

A very attractive and classic specimen of chalky white Meyerhofferite forming sharp, distinctive pseudomorphs after preexisting Inyoite from Death Valley. These are related and very rare calcium-rich borates. This is a relatively large example with notably sharp crystals, and it's also a very aesthetic example of this rare replacement. The largest crystal measures 3.2 cm on its longest dimension. This replacement, and either species in big sharp crystals, is seldom found at any other locality (although recent finds in Argentina produced some). Such a pseudomorph is a very classic locality piece for this important deposit.
From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
