Item Description

A polished 26 gram fragment from the famous Canyon Diablo Meteorite from Meteor Crater or Barringer Crater of northern Arizona. The fragments are classified as an iron octahedrite (coarse octahedrite). The meteorite fell about 50,000 years ago creating a crater about 1200 meters in diameter and 170 m deep and is surrounded by a rim that rises 45 m above the surrounding plains (Wikipedia). Old material from the collection of well-known Jack Halpern of San Francisco No. 1129 (from the 1970s or earlier), as featured in the Mineralogical Record, March 2005. We recently obtained the remainder of his collection. A fine polished example from the famous Arizona meteorite fall with an excellent provenance.
