Item Description

Mellite has always been confusing to me since it's classified as an organic mineral (Aluminium mellitate {benzene hexacarboxylate} hydrate), despite the fact that the definition of a mineral is an IN-organic compound, but I digress. Mellite is arguably the most well-known of the organic minerals, and specimens from the Csordakuti Mine in Hungary are the best around. This piece features classic bipyramidal tetragonal crystals of Mellite measuring up to 2.0 cm on matrix. They're sharp and lustrous with good crystal form. It also fluoresces a brilliant blue! This is a rare mineral, only found in about 12 places in the world, and this particular piece is a classic specimen from this historic locality. This piece comes with a classic label from Josef Vajdak / Pequa Rare Minerals, which immediately increases the value. You can read Joe's biography here: http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1371
