Item Description
From the Capo di Bove Quarry in Rome, this combination piece contains at least two member of the Melilite Group of species and one from an urban area of Rome today! The first species is comprised of brownish-red, cubic-looking crystals that average 2 mm in size (Gehlenite?). A distinct feature of these is the etching in the center of the faces that creates a hoppered look for the crystals. On top of there are many 1 cm, prismatic crystals that are lustrous and water clear. These are found with cavities of old lava flows, which were quarried and used in construction. Previously in the collection of Roberto Palumbo. These pieces are part of a century-old Italian collection that was recently acquired.
