Item Description
Meionite is an uncommon member of the Scapolite Group and this old-timer is from the famous Type Locality in Italy. It was discovered in 1801. A well-placed, 3.0 cm vug, hosts a 9 mm, sharply terminated, colorless, gem crystal along with a smaller crystal and broken crystals. A large contacted crystal is 1.0 cm long. This antique meionite specimen was once in the collection of Colonel Joseph Neeld, 1789-1856 (# 3550). He was a Member of Parliament of the United Kingdom and a Colonel in the Royal Army. This collection, long forgotten and lost track of, resurfaced in England in the early 1980s; and many of the better pieces were bought by mineral dealer Herb Obodda.
