Item Description

What a fine quality, good sized, very well-preserved fossilized Megalodon tooth from West Java, Indonesia. Megalodon is the term used for an extinct fish species (Carcharocles megalodon), which were the largest known sharks (and presumably fish) to ever have lived. These creatures existed on Earth for roughly 20 million years, dating from the early Miocene Epoch (about 23.03 million years ago) all the way to the end of the Pliocene Epoch (2.58 million years ago). While large preserved fossils of Megalodon jaws have been found in various parts of the world, the most recognized examples of Megalodon fossils are the striking large teeth. Megalodon literally means "giant tooth" in Greek, and it's easy to see why these animals got their name. Our good source in Indonesia offered us a small parcel of a few excellent Megalodon teeth, and I'm placing one in the auctions for all your fossil collectors. You can see slight serrated edges on each side of the tooth, and it's rather sharp considering its at least a few million years old. A wonderful representation of these iconic fossils. It seems the demands / popularity for these fossils has been on the rise recently, as I've seen Megalodon teeth in this size range selling in various venues online for as much as $3,000+ in some cases.
The piece weighs 133 grams
