Manganite from Ilfeld is one of those great mineral classics that is hard to beat from other locations even after 100 years and more, and the phrase "it's just a black mineral" certainly does not apply! In reality, the luster and form of these prismatic crystals is quite good, and so consistent, that the phrase among collectors is simply, "it's an Ilfeld" at first glance. This small cabinet specimen is a veritable forest of terminated crystals, and their luster is good no matter what the level of light. The largest of the Manganites reach about 1.3 cm, and Ilfeld is the TYPE LOCALITY, to boot, from a famous find of the 1880s as described elsewhere (for example, Gem & Crystal Treasures)! There are some crystals missing, but the number of crystals, and their distribution, creates a very nice aesthetic as the Manganites grow in all different directions. Aesthetic Ilfeld Manganites are notoriously hard to obtain, and are quickly scooped up when they are available. Better in person. Old label included.
