Malachite (unusual location!) ex Kidwell

What a lovely piece of banded Malachite from an admittedly obscure South African locality (we had to look it up, as well). It is as beautiful as it is interesting - This elongate small cabinet piece consists of alternating 1 to 3 mm bands of dark, medium and light green Malachite that gently roll across the two smooth, somewhat undulating display faces, one of which has a fresher look compared to the other. The bands are obviously concentric when looking at the piece face-on and the overall effect of the thin alternating, varying green bands is aesthetic. The two display faces have a satin luster and the presentation and texture of these is in contrast to the rear of the piece that represents the rough, and pitted outer surface. An attractive and unusual piece from South Africa. Purchased in 1961, and from the diverse and historic collection of one of the great field collectors and mineralogists of mid-1900s Texas, Albert Kidwell of Houston (1919-2008), after whom the mineral Kidwellite is named. This is a totally unique malachite specimens in our experience...almost impossible to value.
