Item Description

Gorgeous piece of highly-polished Malachite from the famous Bisbee District in Arizona characteristic of what came out in the late 1800s and early 1900s for carving material. The classic banding is excellent, and it has a surprising slight iridescence to it that elevates it above many other polished Malachites that you see around. Adding to the beauty and the interest is the botryoidal valley that runs down the middle of this small cabinet piece. To my eye, the juxtaposition of natural form and polished surface is outstanding. The bottom has been sawed for display purposes, so it stands upright for display as a historic polished malachite item from this old locality. Neither detracts one iota from the amazing aesthetics of the piece. Formerly in the Skidmore collection. From the noted historic classics collection of Richard 'Dick' Hauck of New Jersey. 559 grams. (over a pound in weight of pure carving material from old Bisbee!)
