Item Description
This aesthetic and sculptural small cabinet from the famous extinct Onganja Mine hosts three generations of primary malachite. The first generation is the contrasting bright emerald-green tiny drusy malachite plates. The sculptural elongated thumb-shaped vug hosts two generations of densely intergrown crystals - smaller, sharp, lustrous, dark-forest green crystals, to 6 mm, at the base of the thumb and striking larger, more highly defined prisms, to 9 mm, at the dramatic rounnded end of the "thumb". Onganja is noted for world-class cuprite, copper and primary malachite specimens. This is an exceptionally rich and fine multiple generation primary malachite specimen The mine closed in 1974. See the 1996 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 27, No. 2.
