Magnetite (rare cubic habit)

Though they are not terribly common on the market, some of the most distinctive and unique Magnetites from any North American locality are those from Balmat, New York. Their unique cubic habit along with larger sized crystals makes these a favorite "black rock" for many collectors. This attractive miniature specimen is an intergrown group very sharp, highly lustrous, jet-black, beautiful and rarely seen cubic crystals (some showing equally rare tetrahexahedral modifications) with a slight amount of attached white matrix. The largest crystal measures 1.3 cm on edge. I really love the form and the high glistening luster of the piece. Yes, there are some areas of incomplete growth because of the matrix, and there are couple nicks, but you just can't find these specimens anymore, and if you're a fan of metallic minerals, US minerals, or even New York minerals, don't pass this one up. Magnetite is one of those species that everybody knows, but few people actually have good representation in their collections. This one was priced at $900 in the inventory.
