Item Description
Magnetite is not considered a rare species, but it's not terribly common to find large, well-crystallized examples such as this, especially with such a distinctive habit. Certainly some of the most classic Magnetites from North America are those from near Balmat, New York. These are some of the most distinctive and eye-catching Magnetite crystals of the species in the world due to their rarely seen cubic habit. This piece is a large cubic crystal with small slightly raised tetrahexahedral modifications on the broad cube faces. These specimens were mined in the early 1990s, and then no more were found. They are rather difficult to find on the market today. This specimen, despite some obviously damage, is still very good sized for the species and locality, along with it's sharp, lustrous faces. Keep in mind that this crystal measures well over an inch on edge, which is notably large for the species, especially with sharp, lustrous faces. A classic toenail sized specimen of this well-known material from New York.
