Item Description

The historic open pit and underground Haytor Iron Mine was developed prior to 1828, intermittently worked and last actively worked from 1916-21. Periodic collecting has taken place since, but the mine has been sealed as of 2003 (MINDAT). Mineral specimens of any species are rare. Scintillating, sharp, metallic magnetite octahedrons, to 3 mm, are festooned on the front of the undulating granular magnetite matrix plate. The octos are scattered on the back side. This rare rich and excellent older piece is essentially solid magnetite iron ore. Self-collected by E.S. Treseder on December 23, 1965.
