Item Description

A truly bizarre and highly unusual Magnetite crystal group from the Iron Springs District in Utah (though the piece was erroneously labeled as coming from Cedar City). This small cabinet sized specimen features a tightly stacked cluster of sharp, compressed octahedral crystals free of matrix. The piece is very three-dimensional, and it has been described as resembling a building, an accordion or a caterpillar. Some surface oxidation creates a nice contrast, so it's not just "flat black". The front / display side of the piece is damage free, but the back is contacted, though you can't see it when it piece is displayed. Most people are familiar with Magnetite as a species, but good crystallized specimens hard to find and highly sought after. This is certainly one of the most unusual and unique Magnetite specimens I've ever seen. Valued at $750 for its captivating form and size.
