Item Description

An eye-catching group composed of dozens of dark, matte black metallic octahedral crystals of Magnetite measuring up to 8 mm, from Iron Mountain, Utah. The crystals are all sharp and well-formed, which is not always the case with the material, as I've seen plenty of pieces with distorted or crude looking crystals, but the crystals on this specimen are certainly in the higher tier for what I've seen from the locality. Most of the crystals are pristine, though some slight imperfections can be seen in a few areas. From the collection of Richard ("Dick") Philip Hauck formerly of Bloomfield, New Jersey and now a resident of Franklin, New Jersey. Dick is an avid collector of minerals, books, and mining memorabilia, along with being an accomplished author in the mineral world. Arguably, his greatest claim to fame is being the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Dick purchased the land on which the Sterling Hill Mine resides in 1988, and the museum has been running strong since.
