Magnesionigerite-6N6S (ridiculously rare) on Spinel

Item Description

An exceedingly rare specimen of Magnesionigerite-6N6S labeled as coming from a place called Chơi Creek in Vietnam. The accompanying label says the locality is 20 km north of Lục Yên, but I cannot find a reference for this specific locality in any database. With that said, it's also the only piece of Magnesionigerite-6N6S that we've ever had to offer. For reference, this species was originally named Pengzhizhongite-24R, but has been reclassified into the Nigerite Group. Don't be fooled, the blue crystals you see on the piece are Spinel, commonly found around the An Phu area, and the tiny golden-brown spots are the Magnesionigerite-6N6S. A really cool rarity that you're not likely to find anywhere else. If you're a species collector, don't miss out on this one, we don't have another to offer.
From the collection of William ("Bill") (1927-2006) and Anne (1928-2021) Cook of Cleveland, Ohio (#13,963). This husband and wife duo were actively involved in the mineral world for many decades. Bill was a PhD geologist, and Anne was a mathematician, and they both were very serious mineral collectors. Bill served for many years as adjunct curator of mineralogy at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and Anne was inducted into the Micromounters' Hall of Fame on October 12, 2019. Both Bill and Anne, at various times, served as president both of the Mineralogical Society of Cleveland and of the Micromineral Society of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. The rare barium lithium beryllium phosphate Wilancookite was named in their honor in 2015.
