Item Description
Exotic, VERY RARE Lunar Maria Regolith Simulant manufactured by Dr. James Carter of the University of Texas at Dallas on contract for NASA's Apollo landing program. James was a Geology Professor and one-time Department Chairman at UTD, as well as a lifelong mineral collector and member of our MAD collecting group in Dallas. He had remarkably varied interests in the geosciences, including paleontology. He was part of the team that analysed lunar samples from the 5 manned Apollo missions to the Moon in the late 1960s and early 1970s. NASA approached James in 1992 about manufacturing precise lunar regolith or "moon dirt" for later projects. He established ET (Extra Terrestrial) Simulants in 2005 and had developed proprietary production methods using Arizona volcanic rock. It is estimated, that he produced around 50 tons of the material for NASA and other entities, but we have never seen any for sale. It resembles charcoal or volcanic ash and is incredibly finely ground. James passed away in 2019 and we just acquired part of his collection, including this sample of his Lunar Regolith Simulant. Here's your chance to obtain a RARE 865 gram or 1.9 pound bottle of the material. Read about James at: https://www.utdallas.edu/news/faculty-staff/carter-tribute-2019/. He was a long time member of the Mineralogical Associaton of Dallas (MAD) and was an exceptional human being. Value????
