Item Description
Bright bubbly black limonite botryoids dramatically peer out, like multiple insect eyes, above a layer of brown limonite on this showy old-time banded kidney ore specimen from England. It's hard to tell, if the botryoids are polished or not. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 9823. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). Her label says Ulverstone in Lankashire. The only Ulverstone listed in MINDAT is in Tasmania and MINDAT lists Lancashire, England, but not Lankashire. MINDAT lists Limonite (no photos), but not Hematite from Lancashire. We assume this to be VERY RARE Limonite from Lancashire. Limonite is listed in MINDAT from the White Coppice Quarry, Chorley, Lancashire. If it is hematite from Lancashire, it is EXTREMELY RARE!
