Item Description

This specimen comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The piece comes with a typed label from Wulff on one of his famous 3x5 index cards. A note on the card says that this piece was found on Highway 34, midway between Midlothian and Waxahachie in Ellis County, Texas, which turns out to actually be the TXI Cement Quarry on farm road 663. This is a classic specimen of the famous pseudomorphs of Limonite after Pyrite from this limestone quarry about 25 miles southwest of Dallas. A fine "floater" specimen comprising, sharp, well-formed cuboctahedra of Pyrite which have partially altered to Limonite. The piece has a lovely external patina and no damage as far as I can see. Great representation of this classic Texas material.
