Lazurite large crystal on matrix

A well formed, rather equant crystal of lazurite, measuring 3 cm by 4 cm with a typical matte luster and rich azure-blue color, is aesthetically perched on a color contrasting white, calcite matrix. This is literally the iconic look for an example of crystallized Lapis Lazuli, the stone of kings, from the source of the ancient material that was worth more than gold and used to decorate the tombs of kings and pharaohs for thousands of years. Afghanistan was the source then, and really the only source now for such blue, beautiful crystals in large size. This is a fine specimen, with good display impact due to contrast. Such pieces are usually valued $3000-4000 at shows, when you can find one this size. Large specimens are not common anymore, and fewer have come out in recent years.
