Item Description

A really cool Lazulite specimen from the classic old locality at Freßnitzgraben, Austria. Lazulite was named over 225 years ago in 1795, so to have a piece from the part of the world where it was first discovered is certainly noteworthy. This toenail sized piece features flattened crystals of attractive rich blue colored Lazulite measuring up to 9 mm on host rock matrix. If you look at the specimens listed on mindat.org from Freßnitzgraben, you'll see that most of them have a light sky blue color, and not a saturated richer blue shade like this piece. If you collect minerals from the type locality, this is a very worthwhile example for your collection.
From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #22467CL. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
