Item Description

Lawsonite is an uncommon hydrated calcium aluminum silicate species, that was named after the Canadian geologist and geology professor, Andrew Lawson in 1895. The species is not commonly seen in well-crystallized examples, and some of the best-known examples are those from California. This piece is from the Laytonville Quarry (Longvale Quarry) in Mendocino County, and is the ONLY piece we've ever seen from the locale. Small, soft pink colored orthorhombic crystals cover the display side of the specimen. The crystals are best seen under magnification, and we have photographed them close up to better illustrate their quality. A really cool locality specimen that would make a great addition to any suite of California minerals. From the collection of Gerry Morvell.
