Item Description
Here we have a really choice example of these singular and instantly recognizable stones from the Dominican Republic, which are marketed as Larimar. The name "Larimar" is well-known a trade name given to the natural (untreated) blue Pectolite which is only found at the Filipinas Larimar Mine. The actual name "Larimar" is a combination of "Larissa", which was the name of the daughter of Dominican geologist, Miguel Mendez who originally named the material, and "Mar", which is the Spanish word for sea, as it resembles the crystal blue Caribbean Sea. The material is typically massive and opaque, but sometimes you will slightly translucent material. It's important to note that Pectolite is typically a white or off-white hue from most localities, and BLUE is an exceptionally rare color for the species. These amazing stones are only found in one place in the world, and they are becoming increasingly more popular among collectors, jewelers and dealers due to their durability and alluring color. Here we have a fairly large and attractive Larimar gem with a "Pear Cabochon" cut and a beautiful blue and white color combination. The patterns in the stone almost resemble white bolts of lighting against a blue sky but I've seen the pattern referred to as "turtle back" in the gem trade. For the starting bid, the stone is priced at just over $2.50 per carat, which is incredibly low for AAA-grade material like this. I've seen stones of this quality, (but not nearly this size), priced at $50 per carat recently at shows (this stone would be nearly $5,000 retail at that price). Don't miss out on getting your hand on a superb large example of this wonderfully colorful and special material that is only found in one place on earth.
