large Variscite with Crandallite

Item Description

A large polished slice from a rather large variscite nodule, from the historic Little Green Monster Mine. This material is world famous for the variscite, which is carving and lapidary grade. As a specimen, we much prefer pieces like this with contrasting colors, the green against the yellow crandallite. This piece is particularly, unusually rich in crandallite with some regions near translucency. A small association of gray wardite is also present in swirls off to one side. Please note, this piece was repaired, although lock-fit and stable - acceptable in larger slabs of this material, and quite commonly seen at this size. It has a price of $1800 on the back, which is certainly from prior to the museum's founding in 1997 as this was a low number #655 in the museum collection, and would have been in the initial collection of founders Richard and Helen Rice. It masses just over 600 grams.
