Item Description
Tarbuttite is a rare secondary anhydrous zinc phosphate and the well-known Kabwe (Broken Hill) Mine is the Type Locality. Sparkly, gemmy, sharp light brown triclinic crystals are richly and attractively festooned on the upper half of the sculptural, sturdy, large, elongated, layered gossan matrix. There are more crystals on the top of the piece, as well. Old material. Zambia was Northern Rhodesia from 1911 until 1964. The mine closed in about 1989. Broken Hill was discovered in 1902 and the first ore was mined in 1906. This rich and excellent large piece probably dates to the open pit mining period.
