Item Description
Impressive, sculptural and rare large cluster of lustrous intergrown dark smoky quartz crystals, commonly called morion quartz in Europe. The striking large crystal at the top is 9.5 x 8.5 cm and the large crystal just below is 9.3 cm tall. The darker color is caused by natural irradiation by nearly uranium deposits. Backlighting reveals small areas of translucency. For the size, there is only trivial bruising and periphery wear. 1944 grams or 4.3 pounds mass. This rare Brazilian quartz came out in the 1960s and 70s, with none since. See the 1973 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 4, No. 6. Ex Dr. Vasco Trancoso Collection.
