Item Description

Fluorite is rare from this well-known extinct Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Bi-W-Pb-Ba (baryte) mine in the San Juan Mts. This is an impressive, rare and sculptural large combination plate from the Zanett haulage tunnel that was driven in 1981 to intersect the old Grizzly Bear workings. The undulating quartz matrix hosts: scattered clusters of nubby pastel-pink, frosted flattened rhodochrosite rhombs; densely stepped-growth, etched, frosted, colorless fluorite cuboctahedrons, to about 1.0 cm on the left side of the piece; numerous quartz points with some resembling striking icicle-shaped tapered clusters; and scattered unusual secondary gray crusts. The fluorite fluoresces purple. Comes with a Ouray Columbine Mineral Shop label and was undoubtedly collected in the 1980s by well-known Ouray field collector, collector and mineral shop owner Benjy Kuehling. Previously in the Mary Perry Collection. Ex W.S. Logan Collection X34-6. A RARE and desirable large combination from this famous Colorado mine.
