Item Description

Uncommon and remarkable large old-time "feather" of hematite "needle ore" specimen from this extinct large open pit and then deep underground Wisconsin iron mine. Beautiful ribbing and a lustrous gray/mahogany-brown patina highlight this complete all-around and essentially pristine doubly terminated specimen. The two terminations are dramatically different! SELDOM do you see such a LARGE CABINET specimen of this quality and form preserved from this locality. The Montreal Mine opened in 1886 and closed in 1963. This exceptional old-timer probably dates to the 1950s. See the 2020 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 51, No. 3. Formerly in the Fred D. Ashman Private Museum and Joe Cilen collections according to the Chet Lemanski catalogue and acquired in 1999. Joe Cilen was a well-known New Jersey collector who accumulated an over 23,000 piece collection. He passed away in 1997. Read about Joe in the Mineralogical Record Biographical Archive at: https://mineralogicalrecord.com/biographies_labels/cilenjoe/. Specimens of this size and quality usually sell for $1500-2000 today.
