Item Description
Halotrichite or "hair salt" is a hydrated Fe-Al sulfate. It is rare from any of the seven Romania localities listed by MINDAT. MINDAT does not list the species for this less well-known polymetallic mine of the famous and historic Baia Mare area. This is a fantastic, rare and sculptural large stalactite from the locale. Striking radial aggregates of silky lustre acicular hair-like, mint-green crystals with a surreal white shimmer cover the dramatic stalactite. The base is composed of spheroidal masses of halotrichite. The contacted top shows the hole, where the precipitating fluids flowed. An otherworldly and incredibly rare, perhaps unique large 360-degree example of the species and locale.
