Item Description
Wow! A very dramatic and impressive, large for the 2003 find, gemmy crystallized spessartine garnet from this well-known locale. The sculptural, brilliant luster, cherry-red crystal has unbelievable dense etched stepped-growth faces on all sides. This outstanding large crystal has dramatic 360-degree viewability under bright light! Every turn and tilt highlights another densely stepped-growth area of the crystal. The crystal GLOWS, when backlit. Complete all-around and nearly pristine. A bit of periphery wear lower on one side and the out-of-sight attachment at the base are noted, but have but have very little impact to the exceptional high quality of this large crystal. An excellent article in the current issue of Rocks & Minerals by John White, former Curator of Gems and Minerals at the Smithsonian provides an in-depth examination of this fantastic etched spessartine crystal phenomenon at the Navegadora Mine. A very substanial and rare large crystal at 302 grams mass. Most large crystals were cut into gemstones. From an East Coast Collection.
