Item Description

A stunning, large, rich mandarin orange, lustrous, and translucent spessartine garnet from the 2007-2008 finds in Tanzania. The sharp trapezohedron has striking flashes of rich golden-yellow color, interesting striated and rippled faces, and a bit of included and attached matrix. Complete all around. The two contacted areas with attached matrix are mostly out-of-sight in the primary display views. It GLOWS, when backlit! A beautiful spessartine with a lot of geometric appeal, too. A significant large gemmy spessartine from the find with 146 grams mass. NOW GONE - no more are being found! Valued highly as specimens of this quality and size are not on the market anymore. We had a lot of them back at the time, but now they only recycle back to the market slowly. Even at the time, they came out this would have been a significant crystal, valued at over $2500 even then. Try finding one this good, now. Donated to the Rice Museum by a local donor, for this benefit auction.
