large Co-Dolomite casts after Calcite (old classic) Kidwell Coll.

Item Description

A striking large old-time triangular hollow cavernous crust of pastel-pink cobaltoan dolomite pseudomorphs after flattened calcite crystals from famed Tsumeb. The casts on the protruding exterior of this dramatic two-sided piece have a beautiful silky, shimmering sheen and there is a nifty metallic "ding" to the exterior casts, when tapped with your finger nail. The interior casts have a decidedly different look, as they have a secondary overgrowth of sparkly drusy cobaltoan dolomite. Old Upper Level material from the Al Kidwell Collection and acquired from Adi Blignaut in 1960. From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974. This is an exceptional, sculptural and RARE large example of this uncommon casted cobaltoan dolomite varietal after calcite from the renowned locale.
