large Chalcocite & Djurleite w/ Malachite "Copper Wood" (Cook Coll.)

Item Description

A RARE and sculptural large pseudomorph from this extinct open pit New Mexico copper mine. Chalcocite and djurleite, gray to black copper sulfides, have pseudomorphed a large section of fossilized wood. Some of the chalcocite and djurleite has altered to green malachite, adding color and character. "These logs were the main source of ore for the open pit mine, and high silver values were found in some of the logs." (Phil Simmons - well-known New Mexico field collector, collector and dealer). Hefty and rich copper ore with 937 grams or 2.1 pounds mass. Choice and uncommon richly mineralized large copper ore fossilized wood from New Mexico. Locally known as "Copper Wood". Rare in this style and size. Ex Cook Collection. We feel very lucky to have picked up the large collection of Bill and Anne Cook of Cleveland, recently. It is a tribute to their long efforts, how many interesting minerals and old localities were preserved and carefully labelled so you can see them now. Bill and Anne collected for at least 60 years.
