Item Description

The Robert Nowakowski label on this impressive large calcite says the historic mines from Leadhills, but this calcite style is not seen from here. The nearby and extinct (1930s) New Glencrieff Mine (in the same district) produced similar calcites and the piece is undoubtably from here. The rhombs have multiple forms on this striking piece. A 4.7 cm blocky rhomb dominates one edge of the piece. Most rhombs are strongly trigonal/pyramidal and one striking crystal is blocky/elongated (3.5 cm). Gray frosted faces characterize most of the crystals, but some faces are quite gemmy and reveal the honey-yellow interiors. One side displays very well without aid. Excellent and rare large calcite. An outstanding calcite from this historic locale.
