large Axinite-(Fe) (rare, superb CALIF locale!) ex Ordway & Reynolds

Item Description

Classic clove-brown, glassy, highly lustrous, translucent to opaque flattened axinite crystals dramatically fill the sculptural large vug. The impressive large crystal on the upper right is 3.2 x 2.6 cm. The very sharp, glassy prisms in the interior with razor edges reach about 2.4 cm. This is an extraordinary, RARE and rich large axinite from this well-known extinct limestone/marble quarry with pegmatites and contact metamorphics. This amazing piece is from the skarn zone of the deposit. The matrix is essentially solid axinite with RARE probably glassy green elongated actinolite crystals at the base as an accessory. The piece displays well without aid as three sides of the back have been sawed. Self-collected by Al Ordway in 1982. Ex Bob Reynolds Collection, a well-known fossil and mineral expert and Curator of the San Bernardino County Museum. Valued at over $2000. Very rare, perhaps UNIQUE, large and rich axinite combination from the Jensen Quarry.
