Item Description

Impressive large amethyst from South Africa. Two generations of crystals with smaller ones wrapping around the larger ones. A distinctive aspect of these pieces is that the termination faces are glassy and smooth, while the prism faces are coated with the smaller crystals. This is how they became known as "cactus quartz." The imposing large dominating crystal is 14.2 cm tall. Selective iron oxide staining adds color and the matrix of smaller angled crystals at the base adds much character. Super abundant in the early 2000s, the locality in now mined out and specimens of this high quality are not readily available. Ex Chet Lemanski Collection and acquired in 2003.
