Dramatic and sculptural large pair of sliced and polished hollow fossilized colony of coral from Florida. You can see the coral patterns on the outside and inside - that have been replaced or filled inside with botryoidal and banded chalcedony. The interior tubes are fantastic. The botryoids are mostly lavender, nicely contrasted with shades of tan. This is a striking contrast to the translucent amber to brown rims! Ex Al Kidwell Collection. Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974. Probably older material. This is one of those unusual cases where biology meets mineralogy. Total mass is 6.8 pounds or 3.1 kilos.
