Item Description

An impressive and important large afghanite specimen. Uncommon in fine quality specimens, this complex alumosilicate is one of the more obscure members of the Cancrinite Group. Typcially, Afghanite crystals, no matter how saturated the color may be, are opaque. These crystals are not only exceptionally large, up to 7.0 cm, but they are ALL translucent! The colors range from a lovely sapphire-blue to teal-blue, which contrasts very nicely with the white calcite matrix. The crystals have good luster, fine form, and are sharp for the species. Overall, a very impressive, aesthetic, large multiple afghanite crystal specimen with balance and size going for it. From the Obodda collection. Excellent fluorescence. Valued at $2800 and worth it. The current Special Issue of the Mineralogical Record is devoted to this noted locale. Good timing for this very fine spiker.
