Item Description

A 11.2 cm classic variable rich deep blue to light blue, glassy, translucent and striated kyanite crystal is aesthetically angled in the large and sculptural matrix of granular quartz from Yancey County, North Carolina. There are more crystals, to 8.0 cm, and impressions where other crystals once lay on all sides of the specimen. MINDAT shows 10 localities South of Burnsville, Yancey County that list kyanite as a species. Ex John Whately Collection, acquired in 1986 and used in an exhibit, as the piece comes with his display label. John was a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). He had many interests and hobbies. His favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals and he was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society. Dramatic and very showy large combination of these common species from a less well-known North Carolina area. Kyanite specimens are seldom seen and rarely available from the county.
