Item Description

Krohnkite, firstly, is a gorgeous blue mineral that comes in good quality from a single old mine in Chile....and generally 50-80 years ago! This is an uncommon hydrated sodium and copper sulfate, and good crystals ONLY came from the type locality (which means, where it was first found and named) of Chuquicamata, Chile. This was a truly amazing and unique mine with complex and unusual chemistry, that once produced an amazing combination of odd and colorful specimens. Krohnkite is particularly interesting; it is lustrous and translucent and exhibits the most beautiful pure saturated blue color. This is just a significant, old example of a great species. This specimen is mostly an unusually large vein-filling fragment that is terminated at the ends by contact terminations where it grew against the flat rock on either side, and most are frankly nearly impossible to tell if the shape on the sides is natural or is cleaved from contacts in its growth - but in any case, this is "how they are made" in nature. We believe this to be mostly complete, or as near so as any of them can be. And it is large, colorful, and visually mesmerizing!
