Item Description

Hot pink calcite from this famous old copper and cobalt mine is a classic in the mineral collecting world, but this is a little bit unusual! The specimen features a background "velvety" coverage of pink cobaltoan dolomite (not calcite, although they are similar in appearance), as the background for unusual sharp dark green-black crystals. It turns out (by analysis) that these sharp, unusual crystals are kolwezite having replaced cuprite. The replacement seems a complete pseudomorph, and seems the first time this is reported, from a small find in 2020. The crystals reach to just about 1 cm across. This was one of the larger plates in good condition, and has been donated by our friend, dealer Christophe Gobin, to support the Mineralogical Record. It was valued at $6000-7500.
