Item Description

A beautiful small cabinet sized display specimen that is filled with micro crystals of the rare hydrated calcium copper silicate, Kinoite from the famous Christmas Mine in Arizona. Although the best known examples of Kinoite come from this mine, the actual type locality for the species is actually further south in Pima County. The crystals on this specimen have a fantastic blue color, and almost a full coverage of Kinoite, which are associated with colorless Hydroxyapophyllite-(K) or possibly Fluorapophyllite-(K). The species gets its name from the Italian Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino (1645-1711), who was the founder of numerous missions in the PimerĂa Alta region, which occupied modern day Sonora, Mexico and Arizona. You can actually see a statue of him along the Kino Parkway in Tucson.
