Item Description
Kieserite is a very rare hydrated magnesium sulfate species, named for Dietrich Kieser, and German physician who died in 1862. Specimens are virtually impossible to find on the market, and a piece of this size and quality is a real treasure. This full sized cabinet specimen is from the Czech Republic, and is the ONY sample we've seen from the entire country. As a matter of fact, we can't find another one anywhere for comparison. The piece features sparkling yellow-green Kieserite on a dark contrasting host rock matrix. Best seen with magnification to get the full scope of the Kieserite, but it's a big enough specimen that you can easily display it and clearly see the Kieserite from across the room. If you're a rarities collector, this is something that you will likely not see again anytime soon.
From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #6477CL. The piece is a former Czech Geological Survey collection specimen according to Chet's collection catalogue. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
