Kermesite (fine crystals)

Item Description

Kermesite is an uncommon antimony oxysulfide species, which is most commonly seen in thin acicular crystals. In the early 2000s a Kermesite discovery at Dafeng produced what are the largest and finest examples of the species ever seen. The production was short-lived, and we look back on those piece with reverence for their superior quality and size. We found a small parcel of forgotten specimens in our inventory dating back at least 20 years, and we have a select few to offer here in the auctions for anybody who might have missed out on them when they were first available. Keep in mind that we have not seen any more since of this magnitude since the initial discovery. The crystals on this specimen are notably broad for the species, with attractive striations and reflective metallic dark silvery-grey luster on the surface. With VERY strong backlighting, they show an internal gemminess revealing deep red color.  The best method to show this in a photo was to a fairly crude image using a cell phone light, but you it gets the point across.   Kermesite gets its name from the Persian word "qurmizq" which translates to crimson, and nearly all Kermesite crystals will show a tiny bit of a reddish color in one way or another. Don't miss out on this fine quality and now incredibly scarce example from this limited world-class discovery.
