Kammererite (Chrome Clinochlore)

Item Description

There is nothing that quite matches the vivid purple-red hue of kammererite, the rare chrome-rich variety of clinochlore, as found in a series of remarkable pockets over 20 years ago at this top locality for the species, the Kop Krom Mine in Turkey. This rich and sculptural two-sided crust is solid kammererite, consisting of three generations of crystallization. Spectacular, gemmy, purple-red crystals, to about 3 mm, cover much of the vuggy front and very little of the back of the two earlier generations of tiny crystals. The lustrous, translucent, gemmy crystals have textbook, tapering, pseudohexagonal form and GLOW when backlit. Ex Kay Robertson Collection with no collection label. It was misplaced during the move. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
